Wrexham AFC / I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You
intro
05/06/2011 - present day
When I moved to Wrexham in 2008 I had no interest in football, it was a thing other people did or watched and I just didn’t get it. Around 2015 I took my first photograph of the floodlights at the Racecourse because I wanted to take at least one photo in my life that was like the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Over a period of a few years I photographed the floodlights, and that grew in to this project that is documented in part, here… over 14 years I’ve taken at least 10,000 photos, though most of those are taken after January 5th 2019 when I started to engage with this as a potential project. Of course, a lot of those are bad, or don’t really work, and there’s maybe 300-400 that perhaps say something or are worth looking at.
I’d always wanted to follow a football team, but we weren’t a football family and I didn’t have football friends. So in secret I started following them, very casually and I didn’t understand half of what I read or saw. I kept going, and at the beginning of 2020 this became a serious project for me. After the documentary came out, I ‘came out’ as a football fan and told people that I was no longer just an observer, but a supporter.
The title of the project comes from walking down the high street during the victory parade, and hearing those song lyrics playing from the buses. I’m sure I heard somewhere that Humphrey Ker said it was that point of the parade where he started to well up and cry, which was what was happening to me too. I can’t help falling in love with the club, in the same way I fell in love with this town when I moved here.
This project is split in to “chapters” that felt right at the time of editing. They were assigned titles in a somewhat arbitrary fashion, so they may be fitting and full of deep meaning… or might just generally connect to the photos and be mostly meaningless. The beauty of being in the audience is you get to decide if this work and its titles have deep clever meaning, or are just waffle :P
