These are the first photos that feature anything to do with Wrexham AFC. They are the simple beginning, mostly unintentionally, towards this larger scale project that exists now.
My first photo was taken by accident essentially. I was at a Comic-Con on the university campus, and there were people dressed as Colonial Marines, who even had someone dressed in a full Xenomorph outfit with them. I had my camera with me, and so I took a few shots of them milling about outside the event. In the background of one of them you can see the back of the Cae Ras, how it looked in 2011, before that section became the club shop.
Other images feature the floodlights by accident in the background, where they weren’t the intention, but ended up being there. In 2013 a student came on to campus dressed as Deadpool, oddly foreshadowing that character’s importance to the town and club as an almost mascot like figure.
The bungee sign and turnstile images are the first time I realised I had some kind of interest in the space around The Turf and the Cae Ras. I didn’t understand what I was interested in, and likely it was just something visual about the place, but they were the fist time I LOOKED at the space, rather than just glance in passing.
The black and white floodlight image here is the first image I took with intention of the lights or the club. I’d always liked Bernd and Hilla Becher’s typologies series, specifically their pithead shots. I wanted to make work like that, but knew I couldn’t travel around like they did, so I needed to find at least one thing I take a picture of that would satisfy my desire to make something with that visual style. The floodlight matched that criteria, so I took the shot… not realising that it was the first step in a somewhat obsessive project that would take me from having zero interest in football, to regularly attending and photographing matches.
