Music photography isn’t something I ever thought I’d do, and definitely not something I thought I could be good at, but I’m finding I’m drawn to it more and more. I used to go clubbing a lot, and I’ve seen most of the big indie bands of the late 90s and early 00s before they were big, but I hit a point a few years back where I just couldn’t handle the noise anymore. I also felt that I just wasn’t able to take any decent photos of music because I wasn’t keen on the volume these days.
It’s not for me to say whether I’m good at this or not, but I know the pictures on this page make me happy. It’s outside of my comfort zone, I feel really really self-conscious photographing live music for some reason, yet I find myself completely in the moment once I raise the camera to my eye. Most people lose themselves in the music, it’s the audio that transfixes them and takes them to another place. For me, there’s something visually that drags me in, and keeps me entirely in the moment. Looking through a viewfinder somehow helps me to actually hear the music. Photographing musicians is more proof to me that stepping outside of your comfort zone can sometimes take you directly into another, far more rewarding, one.
