Over the last few years the hip hop scene in Wrexham has grown. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to photograph some of the performances that have happened in Wrexham. It’s great to say that I’ve been able to work with Larynx Entertainment, The Lab, Hip Hop Cymru and Red Roach Records.
I grew up surrounded by a lot of hip hop culture as I wrote graffiti under a variety of names, and my brother is Ed Spoons, a breaker in Ghetlow Pirates. It’s been a big part of my life, and as I move in to being proper middle-aged it’s great to be able to document a lot of the younger heads in town who are going to move the culture forwards and continue its traditions. It’s beautiful to see the culture flourishing in a town I would never have associated with it decades ago when I first started listening to the Wu-Tang Clan and Lords of the Underground. Hip hop isn’t something I ever thought I’d get the chance to photograph, especially not at this grass roots level, but it’s been absolute pleasure to do so.
